Proposal

For our group project we attended the “Enhancement of Spatial Congnition and Wayfinding for vision-impaired Travelers Using Remote Infared Audible Signage” lecture. This lecture taught us the statistics of those that are visually impaired. There were statistics of how many times they left their home in a week, the reasons for not leaving, how hard it was to do the little things in life that everyone that can see is capable of doing. The invention that was shown was “Talking Signs” which was a small device that is used as a remote when pointed to the right places would tell you what the building was and how fart and etc. For our project we took out the complicated process of imagining how we would attach things to every building or how we would change this type of project to something else and focus on a much more art related proposal.

We thought of different ideas ranging from holograms to other devices until we came up with the idea of creating a paint that is based on different viscosities and textures for the visually impaired people to paint. This way those that can no longer see can paint without someone else’s help or feel dependent on others. This could be a type of art therapy where the visually impaired to increase their independence.

The link to our powerpoint with a much better and more detailed version of our proposed paint.

Jonah Lehrer’s “The Future of Science is Art?” talks about how art is beneficial to art. It takes the scientific thought process to take a road less traveled making the scientist see the larger picture. People can get discouraged with just imagining the universe in just scientific terms just a model that was created helped show how real the world of science could look. This helped the scientists visualize and understand how it works. This helps show that art can be greatly beneficial to the world of science. This also relates to our project for art does help in a different field than just the typical art world in that art has therapeutic qualities.
